Smog in Cracow

Smog is a big problem for Cracow. It is visible nad perceptible in the air especially in winter, when the days are cold.

Once, the sight of a person wearing an anti-smog mask on the streets of Cracow caused a smile on the faces of residents. Today, many people use them.

According to data from 2014, 400 Cracow residents die every year because of smog. And, it should be noted that there is a memorial plaque on Sławkowska Street dedicated to the victims of smog.

People have talked about smog in Cracow since 2013. The causes of smog in Cracow indicate the way of heating many apartments with coal stoves, heavy traffic and the location of the city.

The situation of Cracow is so complex, because the city lies in a basin where air traffic is limited and to which winds bring pollution from neighbouring towns.

The city authorities are doing a lot to improve the situation. Resolutions prohibiting coal or wood heating were introduced. Many residents benefited from subsidies for changing the way of heating houses.

On days when the air is really dirty, using the public transport is free – there are special messages and ticket validators on trams and buses on this day are blocked. It looks worse in the surrounding towns, which are poorer than a large city and cannot afford such large actions.

There are pollution sensors in several places in Cracow, and you can read the indications and the general state of air quality on special boards. This information is also displayed on public transport screens.
